There’s something special about stepping into a new resort — the way the air feels different, the sound of the ocean just beyond the lobby, and that first glimpse of the pools and restaurants where guests are already making memories. On my recent FAM (familiarization) trip with Meliá Hotels & Resorts, I had the chance to experience all of that firsthand.
As a travel advisor, these trips are invaluable. Brochures and websites can only tell you so much — it’s the little things, like how the staff greet you, the energy of the spaces, or those thoughtful touches for families, couples, and solo travelers, that really make a property come alive.
Over the course of this trip, I visited three Meliá resorts, each with its own personality, charm, and standout features — and I’m excited to share my experiences with you, from the big highlights to the little moments that made me fall in love with Meliá.
Meliá Casa Maya
Our first stop was Meliá Casa Maya, a property that instantly sets the tone for families and multi-generational travelers who want that classic, sun-drenched Cancun experience. This is a resort that knows exactly who it’s for: families looking for a comfortable mid-budget stay, the reliability of a 4-star property, and the kind of service that feels much closer to 5-star.
The heart of Casa Maya is its beach — wide, inviting, and perfect for families to enjoy together. Kids can spend their days building sandcastles or wading into turquoise water, while adults relax under a palapa and soak in the sun. The atmosphere is casual but elevated in all the right ways, making it easy to settle in and feel like you’re truly on vacation.
With just 230+ rooms, the resort feels approachable and easy to navigate — not overwhelming like some of the region’s mega-properties. Dining is also refreshingly simple, with only a handful of restaurants that blend à la carte experiences with buffet-style meals. It’s perfect for families who want variety without the pressure of too many choices.
For those looking for a little more exclusivity, The Level is available. This preferred section offers guests access to upgraded amenities, private spaces, and an elevated layer of service — ideal for travelers who like the feel of a boutique within the resort.
Overall, Casa Maya shines for families and multi-generational groups. There’s enough here to keep everyone happy, from activities for the kids to spaces where adults can enjoy a cocktail or a quiet moment, all wrapped around a beach-centered experience that makes memories easy.
Paradisus La Perla & Paradisus Playa del Carmen
Next up were Paradisus La Perla, where we stayed, and Paradisus Playa del Carmen, which we toured. While both resorts share the same property and beautiful grounds, they are separate resorts with distinct experiences.
Paradisus La Perla is an adults-only retreat, offering serene luxury and relaxation, while Paradisus Playa del Carmen resort is family-friendly, designed to cater to multi-generational travelers. A unique benefit is that guests from either resort can enjoy select amenities at the other — adults staying at the Playa del Carmen resort can visit La Perla for quiet pools or a cocktail, and La Perla guests can explore family-friendly activities at the Playa del Carmen resort. This makes the property highly flexible for a variety of travel styles.
La Perla exudes sophistication and tranquility. From the moment you arrive, the resort feels curated for indulgence — quiet pools, elegant suites, and elevated service that makes every guest feel special. Guests can also stay in The Reserve, rooms with upgraded amenities and spaces for those seeking an extra level of comfort and exclusivity. It’s perfect for couples or friends traveling together wanting a serene escape.
The Playa del Carmen resort is a vibrant, family-focused property. Thoughtful touches like the Family Concierge, kid-friendly activities, and engaging experiences make it ideal for families who want both comfort and fun. The Kidsdom Center happily watches children as young as 1 for free during open hours (giving parents a worry-free break while still on property), while teens can enjoy the secret game room. Even with a livelier atmosphere, the resort maintains a level of sophistication that ensures everyone feels pampered.
The resorts offer plenty of dining options, including a la carte restaurants and buffet dining. Guests can enjoy a Mexican buffet and a traditional a la carte Mexican restaurant on the Playa del Carmen resort, allowing travelers to truly experience the cuisine of the country — something not all resorts in the region offer. Additionally, there are a few exclusive restaurants reserved for guests in The Reserve or with Family Concierge access, giving these guests an extra level of personalized service and unique dining experiences.
One of my favorite aspects of both resorts is how amenities and experiences are thoughtfully curated. Aromatherapy throughout the lobbies, public indoor spaces, and guest rooms adds an extra layer of sensory luxury, while the architecture and art sprinkled throughout the property truly set the mood and make the resorts visually incredible. La Perla emphasizes tranquil elegance, while the Playa del Carmen resort offers a playful yet refined vibe, keeping the two resorts distinct while still cohesive across the property.
Staying at La Perla gave me a firsthand feel for adults-only luxury, while touring the Playa del Carmen resort showcased how well the property caters to families, offering two completely different experiences on one beautiful property.
Reflections on the Melia FAM Trip
Visiting these three resorts gave me a well-rounded perspective of what Melia Hotels & Resorts offers across different types of travelers. From the beach-centered, family-focused vibe of Melia Casa Maya, to the luxurious adults-only experience of La Perla, and the dynamic, family-friendly Playa del Carmen resort, it’s clear that Melia has something for every type of traveler.
What stood out most was the thoughtful attention to guest experience, whether through elevated service, curated activities, or subtle touches like aromatherapy and art throughout the properties. The exchange benefits between La Perla and Playa del Carmen also highlight the flexibility and consideration for different guest needs, making it easy to enjoy multiple experiences in one stay.
For families, couples, and multi-generational travelers alike, these resorts showcase how Melia balances luxury, convenience, and cultural immersion. From the food and beverage offerings to the meticulously designed spaces, each property provides a distinct personality while maintaining the same high standard of service that makes Melia stand out in the region.
This FAM trip not only gave me insight into the properties themselves, but also into the kind of experiences I can confidently recommend to my clients — whether they’re seeking family adventure, adults-only relaxation, or a combination of both. It was a reminder of how important it is to match travelers with the right property for their style and priorities, and Melia makes that easy with their diverse portfolio.
